A 20-year-old phone vendor, Olumide Olusola, is currently in police custody following the tragic death of a police sergeant in the Egbeda area of Lagos State.
The incident, which has sent shockwaves through the community, unfolded during a routine security check along Olugbede Street.
According to the Lagos State Police Command, the tragedy occurred on September 26, 2026.
Officers were conducting a standard stop-and-search operation when they signaled the driver of a Lexus ES 350, later identified as Olusola, to pull over.
Lagos State Commissioner of Police Fatai Tijani stated that the driver initially complied with the directive and brought the car to a halt.
However, as Sergeant Johnson Okediji approached the driver’s side to conduct the search, Olusola suddenly accelerated and sped away from the scene.
“I was trying to stop the vehicle. The vehicle didn’t stop. That’s when the vehicle hit another vehicle in front. That’s when I fell down with the person sitting next to me,” he said.
In a horrifying sequence of events, Sergeant Okediji was knocked down and dragged underneath the moving vehicle for several meters.
Witnesses, including fellow police officers and alarmed passers-by, frantically screamed and signaled for the driver to stop, but the vehicle kept moving.
The officer sustained critical head injuries and multiple severe fractures from the ordeal.
Rushed initially to a nearby medical facility and later transferred urgently to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Sergeant Okediji was unfortunately pronounced dead on arrival by attending physicians.
Following the incident, law enforcement operatives gave chase, successfully apprehending the young driver and impounding the Lexus ES 350.
The remains of the fallen officer have since been transferred to the Mainland Hospital Mortuary for preservation and an impending autopsy.
During interrogation, Olusola denied any intentional wrongdoing, blaming the tragedy on mechanical failure.
He claimed the vehicle’s brakes malfunctioned, adding that it belonged to his mother and that he had only recently taken it to a mechanic to address braking issues.
