The Anambra State Police Command has launched an investigation into the tragic collapse of an old building during demolition at Otolo-Nnewi, in the Nnewi North Local Government Area, which left one worker dead.
According to the Command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the victim—identified as 25-year-old Bakeru Iwal—was evacuated to the morgue for preservation, pending an autopsy and further medical examinations.
In a statement released on Wednesday, SP Ikenga noted that operatives from the Otolo Divisional Headquarters rushed to the scene immediately after receiving the report, cordoned off the area, and began preliminary investigations.
Initial findings indicate that the structure gave way suddenly while workers were pulling down a section of the building, trapping the young worker underneath.
The statement reads partly: “Upon receiving the report, police operatives attached to the Otolo Divisional Headquarters promptly responded to the scene, cordoned off the area and commenced preliminary investigations.
“The scene was also documented, while the deceased, later identified as Bakeru Iwal, a 25-year-old male, was evacuated to the mortuary for preservation, pending autopsy and other necessary examinations.
“Preliminary information indicates that the building was being demolished when a section of the structure suddenly collapsed, trapping one of the workers”, the police statement added.
Meanwhile, the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, has ordered a thorough and professional probe to uncover the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
He assured that appropriate actions would be taken against anyone found culpable.
The statement urged members of the public to remain calm while investigations continue, promising to provide further updates as the inquiry progresses.
