Board laments tobacco adverts in Nigeria films

The National Film and Video Censors’ Board, says Tobacco companies now advertise in Nigeria’s indigenous films.

Chief Executive officer of the Council, Shaibu Useni said this when he featured on AIT programme.

He however did not give the names of the Tobacco companies that promote and glamorize smoking in Nigeria’s movies films.

Useni who clarified that the Board did not ban smoking in Nigeria’s film, but, seeks to regulate the industry against obscene images and ensure that there is proper film classification which is the Board.

“Our concern is that it has got to a point where they glamorize and big tobacco companies promote it.

“Globally, there is a ban on tobacco adverts on television. So, the next place where they want to promote smoking now is in our films and media contents”, he said.

Useni said, “If you want to glamorize smoking in a film, you must give a health warning on screen. That is at the beginning and in the end of the film.

According to him, “We need to do a lot more on terms of Media literacy to keep people in our symbol”.
