BEDC official dies of electrocution near Edo police headquarters

It was a gory sight to behold when a yet-to-be identified Nigerian suspected to be a staff of Benin Electricity Distribution Company, BEDC reportedly died after suffering shock on Sunday afternoon in Oredo Local government Area of Edo State.

The 35-year-old male victim accompanied by other Engineers, was carrying out maintenance work on electricity Cables when the disaster occurred near police headquarters in Benin City.

The victim was said to have strapped himself with his regalia atop a ladder unknown to him that the conductor was yet-to-be deactivated from the power source.

A drilling Engineer who was present when the tragedy occurred, fled the scene, a witness told TheNewspad (online) Newspaper Correspondent that “relatives of the victims are on ground, and there is tension”.

The witness also said he “ran out of his house when he heard screams and allegedly saw sparks coming from the Cables which smashed his head on the tarred road”.

Wailing neighbours around the premises, alerted police operatives who evacuated the shattered body of the victim from the tarred road, to nearby morgue for preservation.

“Policemen from police headquarters are here. Unfortunately, one of the Engineers on ground escaped after his colleague died”, the source said.

Spokesperson for BEDC, Mrs Evelyn Gbiwen could not be reached for comments as at the time of filing this report to confirm if the victim was BEDC or an ‘Ad-hoc staff’.
