A bus driver identified as Uwa Odemwingie has been shot dead by gunmen suspected herdsmen in Iguero Community, Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State.
His assailants who trailed the male commerical bus driver to his residence on his way home last Tuesday evening, traumatized elders of Iguero Community said.
A female resident in the Community alleged that Odemwingie had attempted to escaped before the hoodlums opened fire on him, while he struggled momentarily to hide around her backyard upon sensing danger.
“He (Odemwingie) ran to my backyard. Thereafter, I heard the first gunshot at him, while he was calling for help, but his plea fell on deaf ears while his assailants walked up to him and shot him dead at a close range”, the witness said.
Distraught Iguero village head, Pa. Aisagbonbuomwan Imalele, lamented the heightened state-of-insecurity at Iguero and other neighbouring villages, including Ogua, Izakagbo, occasioned by the alleged invasion of Cattle herders from the other parts of Nigeria.
Imalele who was joined by other elders of the Iguero and other neighbouring Communities, appealed to the State government and security agencies to perform their constructional duties and save the violent attacks and deaths.
“We have not seen this kind of killings before. They (assailants) had kidnapped several people in the past. While some survived after payment of ransom, many others did not live to tell their stories”, according to Imalele.
TheNewspad reports that the recent incident has forced many residents, especially women and children of the affected Communities to flee their homes over fear of been kidnapped or killed.
Odemwingie’s body has been deposited at a morgue by family members of the victim, while response from the Nigeria police Command in the State is being awaited by TheNewspad
