A UK-based Catholic Cleric, Reverend Nick Donnelly has urged the International Criminal Court (ICC) to issue an arrest warrant for Nigerian Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Gumi over what he described as extremist and inflammatory remarks.
According to Reubenabationline, Donnelly made the call in a post shared on his X account on Monday in response to Gumi’s recent comments dismissing claims of Christian genocide in Nigeria arising from Gumi’s recent comments dismissing claims of Christian genocide in Nigeria by the US.
In another viral video, Gumi had said: “Herdsmen are not like the Indigenous People of Biafra; they are kidnapping children to make money. Let’s be fair with them.”
In response, Donnelly argued that Gumi should face prosecution for crimes against humanity.
“Gumi supports ‘herdsmen’, aka Islamist terrorists, kidnapping children to make money.
The ICC needs to issue an arrest warrant on charges of crimes against humanity.
Gumi needs to stand trial in the Hague,” he wrote.
The cleric’s call comes amid renewed demands for Gumi’s prosecution, especially following the recent life sentence handed to IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu for terrorism.
Legal practitioner Malcolm Omirhobo also recently criticized what he described as Nigeria’s two-tier justice system—one that harshly punishes certain individuals while protecting others who allegedly commit serious offences openly.
