Oil spills: Court strikes out fishers suit against NOSDRA

The Rivers State Division of the Federal High Court, has struck out the suit brought against the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency, NOSDRA after seven years of legal battle with the Agency.

The suit, which was filed by Percy Nyengiyikado and Aribiba Ngeribara and other 998 fishermen and women of Yayo-Ama village of Bolo community in Ogu/Bolo Local Government Area for lack of merit by Justice E.A Obile.

The Director General of NOSDRA Chukwuemek Woke, the plaintiff acting as representatives of about one thousand fishermen and women of yayo-Ama village in Ogu Bolo LGA, filed a case against the agency in 2018, according to the Nigeria Television Authority, NTA news.

The suit seeks to compel the agency to perform certain specific statutory duties in respect of two oil spills that occurred in 2008/2009 at the bolo west oil fields against shell Petroleum Development Company, SPDC of Nigeria.
