Governors from South Eastern Nigeria have resolved to interface with the federal government to secure the release of Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu’s from custody since 2021.
Kanu was re-arrested and returned to Nigeria and was charged with reasonable felony trial at the Federal High Court, Abuja, had lost his appeals to secure his release from the custody
of Department of State Security Service (DSS).
The IPOB leader had fled the Country in September 2017 after an invasion of his home by the military in Afara-Ukwu, near Umuahia, Abia State, with fatal attacks and killings in the religion.
The Forum’s resolution is contained in a communique issued on Tuesday July 2nd 2024 by the Governors on the platform of South East Governors’ Forum, which also resolved to visit Mr. President to discuss pressing issues concerning the South East Region.
This was after deliberating on the reviewed report of the South East Security and economic Summit held in Owerri on the 28th September, 2023 and agreed to implement the aspects of the report pertaining to security and economic integration and affirmed its desire to put actionable plans on the key issues agreed.
The group whose membership comprises five Governors — Hope Uzodinma (Imo), Alex Otti (Abia), Chukwuma Soludo (Anambra), Francis Nwifuru (Ebonyi) and Peter Mbah (Enugu) States, commiserated with Government and people of Abia State, Ebonyi State, Imo State, South East, Nigeria and Chief Ogbonnaya Onu’s Family on the demise of Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, former Minister of Science and Technology.
The Forum further said it received the delegation of the former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo GCFR, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, and His Royal Majesty Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe CFR, Obi of Onitsha who came on a solidarity visit to the Forum.
