IGP begins trial of arrested 7 police officers who ran vehicle on civilian

Seven Nigeria police officers in Edo Command accused of misconduct are set to appear before he acting Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olukayode Egbetokun on Monday July 3rd 2023, in a bid to diffuse awful spectre of human rights abuse in the Force.

CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Force Public Relations officer said in a statement directed the Edo State Commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed Dankwara to produce the personnel at the Force headquarters.

This comes in the wake of a grisly viral video of a police team vehicle ran handcuffed middle-aged man , Success Ehimare, was writhed on the floor at Ekpoma in Esan West Local government Area of Edo State.

CSP Adejobi said, “The IGP has, therefore, directed the erring policemen, who have been in detention in Edo State, to report to the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Monday for further action.

“Members of the public, particularly the people of Ekpoma, are implored to remain calm as the present leadership of the NPF will not condone such an act of unprofessionalism and illegality”, he said.

In a phone conversation, the spokesman of the Nigeria Police Command in Edo State, SP. Chidi Nwabuzor said seven policemen are currently in custody, will appear before the acting IGP.

Nwabuzor revealed that the Command spoke to the injured victim at Ekpoma’s accident.

He explained that the officers had been arrested, and they are with the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), where they are undergoing through some interrogations.

“He (Ehimare) is just doing well. We spoke to him. He has survived. There is no fracture. It is just spotty bruises”, he said.

Nwabuzor said, in light of the above, CP Mohammed Dankwara condemned the action of the policeman and gave a marching order to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Ekpoma to identify, arrest, and bring to the State Police Headquarters Benin to be briefed and debriefed.

“The facts of the incident as gathered preliminarily indicates that on 29/06/2023 at about 1700hrs, ASP Magdalene Osayande reported at Ekpoma Divisional Police Headquarters, Ekpoma, Edo State that while on routine stop and search duty with her team of six (6) policemen along Ihumudumu Road, Ekpoma, Edo State, intercepted a driver of unregistered Lexus car and demanded for the vehicle particulars.

“Along the line, he became aggressive and refused to oblige the request of the Police operatives, but rather attacked them, inflicted injuries on them, and destroyed Police vehicle”, Nwabuzor said.
