Why past leaders chose morphine while praying for miracle, by Tinubu

Date:

President Bola Tinubu has reflected on the nation’s journey, noting that while the country has endured war, economic crises, and political upheaval through the indomitable spirit of its people, the path has often been too hard.

Highlighting the true weight of the nation’s history, Tinubu noted, “Our journey has not always been easy. In truth, it has generally been too hard for too many. We have known moments of great hope and periods of profound disappointment.”

Addressing the structural decay that plagued the Country leading up to 2023 as Nigeria marks sixty-six years of independence, the President pointed out that years of evasion and deferred responsibility pushed the nation to the brink.

For decades, governance was characterized by short-term fixes rather than genuine healing, as he explained: “For too long, the promise of Nigeria was undermined by choices that postponed difficult decisions and allowed deep economic distortions to grow”.

Comparing the nation’s economic reality to a severe medical diagnosis, Tinubu vividly illustrated how past administrations chose temporary comfort over permanent recovery.

Instead of confronting systemic failures, previous leaders opted for avoidance, leading to the core critique that

“Nigeria was like a sick patient who receives the terrible news that he has cancer… The patient has a choice. He can begin treatment, endure its discomfort and fight the disease. Or he can ask only for morphine, dull the pain and leave the cancer to spread”.

Driving home the central message of his Independence Day address, the President directly indicted previous governance styles for choosing evasion over action.

He stated plainly that “For too long, Nigeria’s leaders chose morphine while praying for a miracle that never came,” focusing only on superficial symptoms while allowing deep-seated structural issues to ravage the economy.

Contrasting past inaction with his administration’s bold policy steps, the President emphasized that the difficult reforms implemented since 2023 were necessary surgical interventions to save the economy.

Rejecting calls to return to unsustainable subsidy regimes, he stressed, “When this Administration assumed office, we resolved to do things differently. We chose to excise the cancer.

The reforms that followed were difficult. The side effects were real. Yet, we must never confuse the medicine with the disease”, according to him.

Highlighting the tangible results of these bold choices three and a half years later, the President pointed to robust economic indicators, including an over 4% growth rate in 2023–2026, stabilized foreign exchange, and record-breaking non-oil exports.

Reassuring citizens that the foundational emergency phase has yielded fruit, the President stated, “These are not idle claims. International observers, journalists, NGOs and multilateral institutions can see the change.

Shifting the focus from emergency economic correction to broad, inclusive growth, the Tinubu outlined his administration’s next phase: driving down the cost of living, expanding agricultural mechanization, and boosting industrial output.

He emphasized a future built on productive work and shared abundance, declaring, “The emergency treatment is over.

“The foundation has been repaired. The central economic task before us has changed. For three years, our overriding purpose was to correct our nation’s course. Now, our purpose is simple: shared and widespread prosperity.”

He also urged citizens to press forward and reject calls to revert to past errors. Drawing inspiration from the journey so far, stating, “Nigeria has corrected its course.

“We have passed through our own Red Sea. This is not the time to look back. Let us go forward together, with faith in ourselves, faith in our Country, and faith that the sacrifices we have made will yield their reward”, according to the President.
