The University of Benin has reinforced its academic standing, recording visible upward movement in the latest Nigerian universities ranking released by the Federal Ministry of Education recently.
According to a statement from the Ministry, the Federal Government — under the directive of the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa—mandated the Professor Peter Okebukola-led Tertiary Education Ranking Advisory Committee to initiate the 2026 domestic ranking.
The strategic move serves as a precursor to the 2027 Times Higher Education (THE) Global Ranking, according to the statement by the federal government.
Other institutions also listed that made notable progress include the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ahmadu Bello University, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, and the University of Ilorin.
The newly established assessment framework is designed to drive healthy competition, boost institutional visibility, and enhance global competitiveness, with a particular focus on research quality output as a core performance pillar.
Industry observers note that this success builds directly upon proactive internal reforms.
Driven by the institution’s management, the Directorate of Academic Planning recently coordinated a comprehensive exercise directing academic staff to update their Google Scholar profiles.
The initiative has yielded immediate results, capturing over 1,200 academics and propelling UNIBEN to the number one spot among participating Nigerian Universities.
With the documentation exercise slated to run through Monday, October 5, UNIBEN leadership anticipates even greater representation as it sets its sights on international dominance.
