The Management of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma in Edo State has denied claim by a former Governor of the State, Godwin Obaseki, who accusing the institution of selling Certificates to some graduands who do not attend classes in the University.
Obaseki — the former visitor to the State-own University, made the claim in a viral video on the internet, following allegations of starving the institution of funds during his tenure in office as Governor.
The Acting Vice-Chancellor of Ambrose Alli University, Prof. Sunday Olowo Samuel, spoke during a ceremony to honour a distinguished Alumnus Dr. Isinene Onoabhagbe.
Dr. Onoabhagbe’s achievements, including developing innovative surveillance systems for Lassa fever and advancing Women’s Health Research as well as showcasing excellence and global relevance of Ambrose Alli University graduates.
Prof. Samuel described Dr. Onoabhagbe, a renowned expert in Clinical informatics and health data Science as one of the University’s outstanding products making waves globally.
“We’re proud to count Dr. Onoabhagbe among our esteemed alumni. We anticipate her continued impact in medicine, health data science, and global public health. Our graduates excel through hard work and resilience, earning their certificates and distinctions through merit, not purchase,” according to Prof. Sunday Olowo Samuel.
In her acceptance speech, Dr. Isinene Onoabhagbe, represented by another alumnus of the institution, Dr. Obasanmi Jude, Lecturer and Research Consultant on Womanity Index Survey 2025 with INVICTUS Africa, expressed delight for the milestone.
He said, “I am proud to have graduated from this university, and I am proud to be part of a Community that values excellence, integrity, and service.
“Lessons I learned here, the friendships I formed, and the mentorship I received, have been invaluable in shaping my career and my life”, according to him.
While urging AAU undergraduates to shun social vices, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Ambrose Alli University, Chief Dan Orbih, congratulated Dr. Isinene Onoabhagbe for the academic feat in the University, which he said is working hard to achieve and sustain global relevance.
“As we reshape the University, we call on our students to uphold the institution’s values and purposes,” Orbih said.

in 2021, Obaseki set up the Special Intervention Team (SIT) in AAU, led by Austin Osakue, with a two-year mandate of the direct management of the University.
The move followed the dissolution of the Chief Lawson Omokhodion-led Governing Council of the University, setting members of the AAU chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities on edge.
During the period of Obaseki, key Principal positions in AAU, including the Vice Chancellor, Registrar, Liberian, Bursar were all appointed by him in acting capacity, prompting a revolt by the then leadership of President of ASUU, Prof. Emmanuel Osedeke.
