UNIBEN students union suspended indefinitely

The Vice Chancellor of University of Benin, Professor Lilian Salami on Monday approved the suspension of the students’ Union indefinitely.

This comes barely one week after members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Benin Chapter, threatened not resume work for the Second Semester academic session schedule to begin on April 28, 2024 over attack on one of its members.

The Registrar of the University, Mr. Ademola Bobola in a circular issued on Monday April 29th 2024., said the school’s Management decision is with immediate effect.

This was after Vice Chancellor had reviewed the Management the Panel’s Report constituted to investigate the incidents that occurred in the Faculty of Law and the University’s Senior Staff Club on April 12, 2024.

Accordingly, “All officers of the students’ Union are to handover all properties of the Union in their possession to the Dean, Students Affairs not later 4p.m on Tuesday 30th April 2024”.

In the interim, a Caretaker Committee composed of representatives of Facilities, Schools and institutes has been approved to coordinate Students’ activities during the period of Suspension, according to the University.

the Lecturer, Dr Presley Osemwegie, got a close shave with death in an clash when some UNIBEN students who claimed that were not informed ahead of the visit, clashed with supporters of Labour Party Candidate in the September 21, 2024 Edo State governorship election, Mr Olumide Akpata visited the school on April 12, 2024.
