Two suspects behind smuggled drugs into Nigerian prison arrested

Operatives of the Nigerian Correctional Service, NcoS, officials have arrested two suspected drug traffickers behind attempt to smuggle drugs into its Custodial Centre in Ondo State.

The suspects who disguised as visitors were caught with about four grams of Indian hemp, concealed in fresh tomatoes by vigilant officers during a routine search at the gate lodge of the facility.

Ondo NCoS Command’s spokesman, Chief Superintendent of Corrections, Oyewole Akinwumi said the substance had been carefully wrapped in water-tight nylon with the intention of delivering it to an inmate in Custody.

SP Akinwumi revealed that the suspects were immediately apprehended and handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and prosecution.

The Controller of Corrections, Ondo State Command, Oyewole Charles, commended the officers on duty for their professionalism and alertness.

He reaffirmed the Service’s unwavering commitment to maintaining secure and humane custodial facilities, while ensuring that all forms of trafficking in illicit substances are decisively stamped out of the Correctional system nationwide.

The Command also warned members of the public, particularly visitors to custodial Centres, that the Nigerian Correctional Service will not tolerate any act capable of compromising the security and safety of its facilities, whether from within or outside the Custodial walls.

The Ondo State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service has foiled an attempt by two visitors to smuggle illicit drugs into the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Akure.

The incident occurred during a routine search at the gate lodge, where vigilant officers uncovered about four grams of Indian hemp concealed in fresh tomatoes.

“The substance had been carefully wrapped in water-tight nylon with the intention of delivering it to an inmate in custody.

“In line with the directive of the Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, on watertight security and custodial Centre safeguarding, the suspects were immediately apprehended and handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and prosecution”.
