Tension over UNIBEN’s student’ murder on campus

University of Benin (UNIBEN) Community has been set on edge over the alleged murder of its final year student in gun attack, causing upset and pandemonium.

The final year student of Public Administration simply identified as ‘Mayor’ who was shot dead by gunmen 9.p at hall 3 hall of residence on Ugbowo Campus in the institution.

It was learnt that the students scampered for safety after the student was gun down in his room by unknown gunmen who were said to have beat security checkpoint.

Mayor was shot at a close range and left in the pool of his own blood in the cult-related attack.

Before security agents in the school arrived the scene of crime, the suspected assailants escaped.

It was learnt that the delayed response by the security agents to the calls by students who had fled to different directions when tragedy struck.

A male student can be heard weeping uncontrollably in a shot disturbing video footage over the death of the student.

The decease had been taken into an ambulance and deposited at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) morgue, while some students in the hotel, have began to move out in droves.

Commenting on the alleged murder, Chukwukere Daniel, alumnus of UNIBEN, described the incident as sad and barbaric.

He said hostels in the school compound are suppose to be safer for students and staff.

“During our days, the school compound is a safe heaven for all. You can bank on it. Right now, even the students fear for their lives even inside the hostels. So sad”,Chukwukere wrote on Facebook.

Victor Imhanze who expressed shock over the tragedy, said, ” inside the hostel in his room. I am really shocked. I am left to wonder if any place is really safe then”.

A statement by the University Management is being awaited.
