Outrage has gripped Rivers State following the alleged fatal shooting of a young socialite, Anthony Obodo, by police operatives at a checkpoint in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The incident has sparked intense protests and widespread condemnation over the tragic event which unfolded on August 27, 2026, at the Agip junction on Ada George Road, Port Harcourt.
According to preliminary reports, an altercation erupted between police personnel and the occupants of a vehicle belonging to the 22-year-old victim.
The confrontation escalated into gunfire, resulting in Obodo’s death and injuries to two other co-occupants in the car.
In the wake of the killing, grieving friends, youths, and community members staged a peaceful yet volatile protest at the scene, demanding immediate justice.
Protesters carried placards bearing fiery inscriptions, with some reading, “The Nigeria police should stop killing our youths. They are criminals,” and “The Nigeria police dey do fraud pass youths.”
Speaking on the tragedy, the victim’s father revealed that his son had been unfairly branded as an internet fraudster, popularly known as a “yahoo boy,” prior to the fatal shooting.
The anger extended online through viral footage. In one widely circulated video, an unidentified man—believed to be a relative— confronted the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of the jurisdiction.
He questioned why officers resorted to lethal force, arguing that even if the vehicle had failed to obey stop-and-orders, the police could have immobilized the car and arrested the occupants rather than executing a fatal shooting.
Reacting swiftly to the incident, the Rivers State Police Command confirmed the arrest and detention of the operatives involved.
In a statement issued by the Public Relations Unit, the police detailed the preliminary findings: ”Preliminary information indicates that on 27th August 2026, there was an altercation between the occupant, one Anthony Obodo (m) and there was a scuffle between the duo. This led to gunshot and consequently led to the death of the victim, in which two other passersby were injured.”
The command added that the primary officer allegedly involved, Cpl. Alfred Louis, was attacked and assaulted by an angry mob during the chaos, sustaining multiple injuries.
”The officers and members of his team are currently in State CID and will face appropriate disciplinary actions in accordance with the law subject to the outcome of the investigation,” the statement read.
Denouncing the conduct of the personnel, the command stated unequivocally that the actions of the officers were entirely condemnable, lacked professional policing standards, and would be met with strict disciplinary measures.
