Police gun down alleged kidnapper, rescue six hostages in Benue

A member of a kidnap gang that engaged security agents in a gun duel that preceded the rescue operation of six hostages in Benue State, has been gunned down.

Police authorities said a joint security agents, trailed and stormed the criminal hideout in Agbanor village, Okpokwu Local government in the State.

Spokesperson for the Nigeria Police Command in the State, SP Catherine Anene said in a statement that four suspected kidnappers were also arrested in connection with the crime.

SP Anene gave the names of the quartet as Muhammed Ibrahim, Usman Sule, Azoto Alhaji and Abubakar Shehu, assuring that investigation to arrest fleeing gang members, is ongoing.

She explained that the hostages who have received treatment at the hospital and reunited with their families while investigation is ongoing to arrest suspects at large.

The police spokesperson recalled that “On 22/9/2023 at about 1700hrs, information was received at Ado Police Division that four (4) girls and two(2) women were kidnapped, while they were on their way to the farm in Utonkon District.

“On sighting the police, one of the suspects engaged them in a gun duel but was over powered by the police and arrested with one single barrel gun loaded with two live cartridges . Three other suspects were also arrested within the area.

“A search conducted in the hideout led to the rescue of the six(6) victims who have received treatment at the hospital and reunited with their families while investigation is ongoing to arrest suspects at large, “, SP Anene said.
