Police blame spiritual forces on extra-judicial killing by detained officer

Date:

The Nigeria police Command in Delta State says the possibility spiritual forces may not be unconnected to the murder of arrested 28-year-old suspect Mene Ogidi, by police officer in the State.

The incident, which occurred on Sunday, April 26, at Effurun in Uvwie Local Government Area, involved an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Nuhu Usman, also known as Ogbegbe.

The Command’s spokesman, SP. Bright Edafe dropped the hint during a live interview on Channels Television on Wednesday, while addressing the controversy trailing the video that showed a suspect being executed in public by the trigger-happy officer.

The Command has no clear explanation for the incident and that “spirituality may not be far from it”, according to the police image maker who condemned the act, noting that the officer would be charge with murder in line with the provisions of the law.

A viral footage, of the fatal shooting that shows the young man sitting on the ground with his hands tied behind his back (restrained with a rope or handcuffs, has sparked outrage amongst Nigerians and the international Community.

The suspect was seen pleading for mercy, offering information about someone who allegedly deceived him and saying he would cooperate and lead officers to the person in Sapele, ahead of his execution by the cop.

Afterwards, the officer in mufti pulled the trigger on his rifle and shot at close range, and the suspect slumps over dead in broad daylight.

The lasted extra judicial killing of Mene Ogidi, reminds Nigerians of the dark days of #End police brutality and extortion campaign that cascaded into a riot in October 2020 and disbandment of SARS by the Nigeria police Force. Some lives were lost and destruction of property during the crisis.

#End SARS” (or #EndSARS) conotes a demand for decentralization social movement and protest campaign demanding the dissolution of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, a controversial unit of the Nigeria Police Force known for abuses.
