Police avert jungle justice over gov’s aide death

Police authorities have detained Pastor David Favour Love in a bid to avert what would have resulted in a potential jungle justice, arising from the death of Mrs Shimite Bello Love, a scion of Nwakalo, who was the Special Adviser to the Delta State Governor on Trade and Export ― an alleged victim of spousal abuse.

The woman died on Easter Sunday, her family source that hinted that former Governor’s aide was seen by a witness foaming at the mouth, raising suspicion of a food poisoning, leading to her death at St. Luke’s Hospital, Asaba in the State where she was undergoing emergency care.

But, Bright Edafe, spokesman for the Nigeria Police Command in Delta State told TheNewspad that Shimite husband, David Favour Love has been taken into protected custody by police operatives in connection with the death of his wife whose cause of death will be determined by an autopsy.

Edafe revealed that Love, the husband of the victim who was the former Governor’s aide, contacted the police after the tragedy.

Speaking in a telephone interview, the police spokesman said, there has being threats from the deceased family over the incident .

According him, “we (police) got the report. In fact, it was her husband who called that his wife felt sick and later died. However, there is threat from the woman’s family.

“So, we kept him (the husband) in protective custody, while we are looking at what would have led to her death.
For now, it’s sickness. But, autopsy will determine if there was any other external factor”, the police said.

Earlier, a family member, who requested anonymity, told SaharaReporters that Shimite was in good health just a day before her death.

“I spoke with her for over an hour on Saturday. She was vibrant and told me about a meeting she had earlier attended. Nothing was wrong with her,” the source said. “On Sunday, I sent her Easter messages, but she didn’t reply—which was unusual.”

According to the source, the family’s alarm was raised when Shimite’s maid called her elder brother, expressing concern that the husband had locked Shimite in the house all day.

“Her brother rushed over and found her inside the house with foam already coming out of her mouth. He took her to the hospital, but she was declared dead on arrival. The police were immediately called and arrested her husband”.

Earlier, family members of the deceased allege that Shimite’s husband had isolated her from loved ones and tightly controlled her movements.

“Since he came into her life, he cut everyone off. Her brother couldn’t even visit. He wouldn’t let her go to the office. He was always trailing her.

“Even the name on all her properties in Abuja and elsewhere was changed to his name. We believe she was manipulated—hypnotised even,” a family source said.

Shimite, who contested the Oshimili North constituency seat in the Delta State House of Assembly during the 2023 PDP primaries, had previously served as the Executive Secretary of the Delta State Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency during Governor Ifeanyi Okowa’s administration.

The victim was also the Group President/CEO of the Quintessential Group—a conglomerate comprising NGOs, social enterprises, and companies operating in agriculture and solid minerals in Delta State.
