The Nigeria police Command in Ekiti State has arrested a police officer filmed while rolling on the floor at Ikole area of the State last weekend.
The yet-to-be named officer caught in camouflage uniform displaying conduct grossly inconsistent with the standards of the Force, according to DCP Anthony Placid, Nigeria Police Force Public Relations officer.
He revealed: “Upon becoming aware of the footage, the Ekiti State Police Command immediately identified him as a Sergeant attached to the Ikole-Ekiti Divisional Police Headquarters.
The statement said, “”He (officer) has since been taken into custody to face disciplinary action”, just as the Commissioner of Police, Ekiti State Command, CP Falade Adegoroye Michael, has directed a comprehensive psychological and medical evaluation of the officer in the video.
“This assessment is a mandatory prerequisite to the formal disciplinary process, ensuring that the Force addresses both the conduct violation and any underlying health concerns in a thorough and responsible manner.
“The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, unequivocally condemns the conduct displayed in the video as a gross deviation from the discipline, professionalism, and decorum required of every member of the Nigeria Police Force.
“The Force maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward substance abuse and any behaviour that undermines the integrity of the uniform or erodes public trust in the institution”, Placid said.
Earlier, bemused residents of Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State Capital were gripped with fear after the police officer reportedly succumbed to suspected hard drugs.
Bystanders watched with shock as the unconscious officer, reel in pains on the red soil in a viral video circulating on social media.
The officer was rolling on the floor at some time, and holding his head in the video in front of a nearby tent.
