The political landscape of Edo State has been plunged into deep sorrow with the passing of Godwin Oni Edigin — a Benin legal icon and one of the founding pillars of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Family sources confirmed that the octogenarian passed away on Wednesday morning at his residence in Benin City, the Edo State capital, following a brief illness.
His transition comes barely a month after the passing and burial of another stalwart of the party, Dan Origin, who was recently laid to rest in Ogbonna, Etsako West Local Government Area.
The late politician was widely respected for his lifelong dedication to public service and democratic ideals.
He was a close confidant and ally to former governors Lucky Igbinedion and Godwin Obaseki throughout their respective tenures in office.
His political journey traced back to the era of the defunct zero-party system, and he famously served as youth leader during the administration of Brigadier-General Samuel Ogbemudia, who was a former governor of the defunct Bendel State.
A former Governor of the State, Godwin Obaseki has joined friends, family, and political associates to mourn this immense loss his legacy of steadfast loyalty and service that remains deeply cherished.
In his tribute, Obaseki described Edigin as a distinguished son of the Edigin N’ Use Royal Family, a respected legal luminary, and a man of immense wisdom, courage and character.
The late legal practitioner was a man of great accomplishment, but he was more than that.
He believed deeply in his people and was always ready to offer his counsel, support and encouragement in the service of the society.
Obaseki said, “During my time as Governor, I benefited personally from his friendship, wise counsel and unwavering support”.
Obaseki said, “He was one of those rare individuals who never sought the spotlight, yet whose presence, advice and commitment made a lasting difference.
“His passing is a deep personal loss to me, and a great loss to the Edigin family, the Benin Kingdom and Edo State as a whole.
“At this difficult time, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the Edigin N’Use Royal Family, his children, siblings, relatives, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
He prayed God grant the family the strength to bear this irreparable loss, while praying for the repose of his soul.
