Five suspects behind a brutal attack on police operatives have been remanded by an Ota Magistrate Court in Ogun State.
The incident occurred after a police patrol team intercepted and arrested a suspect found in possession of a large quantity of substances suspected to be Indian hemp.
The suspects—Morenikeji Badmus, 36; Adedoja Segun, 40; Jeremiah Odise Ugbede Onride, 49; Mike Stephen, 28; and David Odeh, 32—were remanded pending legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).
The personnel were violently assaulted while performing their lawful duties around the Bells area in Iyana-Iyesi, Ota, on October 2, 2026.
The police spokesman for the Ogun State Police Command, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed the development in a statement on Wednesday.
He stated that the officers were ambushed by a mob that attacked them with cutlasses, stones, and bottles while they were conveying the handcuffed suspect to the station.
The attack resulted in injuries to police personnel, damage to an operational vehicle, and the escape of the primary suspect, according to Babaseyi.
Following immediate intelligence-led operations, the command apprehended the five suspects, who were subsequently arraigned in court.
He disclosed that their charges border on conspiracy, serious assault on police officers, obstruction of lawful duty, and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace in the State.
While efforts are ongoing to apprehend fleeing accomplices, the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni, emphasized that the safety of officers remains a top priority.
The command further urged members of the public to refrain from physical confrontations with law enforcement personnel and to channel any grievances through established legal channels.
