Oba of Benin makes case for women in politics

Omo N’ Oba N’ Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, CFR, Oba of Benin has stepped up advocacy towards breaking barriers that discourage Nigeria women participation in politics.

Oba Ewuare made the assertion when the Edo State gubernatorial Candidate of Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) in the September 21 2024 election, Patience Ndidi Key, a scion of Uwagboe’s family visited Oba Palace in Benin City.

The traditional ruler stated that women should no longer be relegated to the background, especially in governance due to their strength and population.

The Royal father commended the leadership of Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) for ceding its gubernatorial ticket to a woman despite the ‘patriarchal and patrilineal’ structure of human society that is dominated by men.

According to Oba Ewuare II, “A female in our society that is patriarchal and patrilineal — dominated, you came out amongst all the male to contest. So, I commend the party — PRP, which deemed it fit to pick you as their flag bearer, recognizing the strength of a woman in the scheme of things.

“I have always believe that women must be recognized as important, not to be suppress to the background. Without women, what will men do?”, Oba Ewuare asked.

Earlier in her remarks, the gubernatorial Candidate of PRP, Patience Ndidi Key, commended Oba Ewuare’s efforts that drastically reduced the menace human trafficking and solicited for prayer and blessings from the Palace.

She said, “I am running for the governorship because I see repression and retrogression in our great land. I am running for the governorship because I see hunger and anger. And I have come to honour that call of governance”.

Ndidi Key, promised to leverage her wealth of experience in the world of business of given the mandate, emphasizing that Edo people do not deserve to live in penury if the tourism sector and agricultural resources are well harnessed for for productivity.

The former chairman of Nigeria Chamber of Commerce in diaspora said, “when I saw all the work you (Oba Ewuare II) did regarding human trafficking, it gave me joy”.
