A 43-year-old man, Yusuf Hassan is cooling his feet in police custody for arson and attempted murder in Ogun State.

He was arrested by men of Ogun State Police Command for allegedly setting the apartment of his ex-lover Busayo Falola ablazed over strained relationship.

A statement by the Nigeria police Command in Ogun State, SP. Abimbola Oyeyemi confirmed Yusuf, the suspect’s by police operatives on 4th of April 2023 in connection with the crime.

He revealed that three tenants including Busayo, narrowly escaped death in the inferno that destroyed the building within her compound situated at no 127, old Schorlar Palace, Igan road at Ago Iwoye area.

The incident, according to the police, happened at about 1:15 am, and when she came out she discovered that the building was on fire while the tenants in the house were trapped in there.

The police spokesman said the suspect was arrested, following a report lodged at Ago Iwoye Divisional Police headquarters by the 62 years old landlady of the house, Adejoke Salau.

Salau who reported that she heard a noise from one her building within her compound situated at no 127, old Schorlar Palace Igan road Ago Iwoye, at about 1:15 am, and when she came out she discovered that the building was on fire while the tenants in the house were trapped in there.

She also explained that it was quick intervention of neighbors that rescued the three tenants, but the house got burnt completely.

“Upon the report, the DPO Ago Iwoye, CSP Noah Adekanye, led his men to the scene from where the occupants of the house were invited to the station for interrogation in order to know the possible cause of the inferno.

On interrogation, one of the tenants, Falola Busayo informed the police that she saw her ex-lover Yusuf Hassan at the back of her window at about 12:30 am of the fateful day”, SP. Oyeyemi said.

Busayo, the estranged lover of Yusuf, explained further that she was scared to see him at that ungodly hour which made her to scream and ran out of her room to the room of another tenant.

She said this made other tenants to come out in order to check what Yusuf was up to, only for them to discover flame coming out from Busayo’s room. Consequently, police detectives launched manhunt for Yusuf Hassan and was arrested him.

The police spokesman said that the suspect had initially denied knowing anything about the incident.

But when the DPO ordered detectives to go to his house and find out whether he was at home as of the time of the incident, he thereafter confessed been the person who set the house ablazed.

The police statement said Yusuf confessed further that he intended to burn his ex-lover in her own apartment after several efforts to reconcile with his ex-lover failed.

The anger prompted him but to buy he buy #500 petrol in a keg and poured it into Busayo’s room through the window and set the apartment on fire.

Meanwhile, the State Command has directed that the suspect be transferred to State Criminal Investigation Departments for further investigation and possible prosecution.
