Police authorities say the arrested suspect Friday Onu who assaulted a female driver, Ms Yetunde Amole on Lekki-Epe Expressway in Lagos State, has been admitted to the police Clinic at Falomo area after falling ill in police custody.
Spokesman for the Nigeria Police Command in Lagos State, Benjamin Hyundeyin who confirmed the arrest of the male suspect, Onu on Wednesday in a statement, stated that he was nabbed by personnel from the Maroko Division shortly after the incident.
Onu fell ill while in detention and was promptly moved to the Falomo Police Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment under police supervision”, according to Hundayin who assured that the suspect will have his date in court soon as he is declared medically fit.
A viral video captured female commercial driver, Yetunde Amole, battered by the suspect who also stole her vehicle battery after assaulting her and had her clothes torn during the incident on Monday.
The victim who had bruises on her face, had appealed to human rights organisations, transport unions and well-meaning individuals to defend her and have the culprit punished, sparking outrage in the internet, with many Nigerians demanding for justice for the victim.
The police spokesman said, “Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect was caught attempting to steal Ms Amole’s car battery.
“When she confronted him, he responded with a violent attack, which was captured on video and widely circulated.
“We commend the courage of Ms. Amole in standing up to her attacker”, he said the complanant has also made useful statement with the police authorities in Lagos.
