Kebbi police foil mob lynching of 2 suspected motorcycle thieves

Date:

The Kebbi State Police Command has foiled an attempt by an angry mob to lynch two persons suspected of motorcycle theft and recovered seven motorcycles following a violent incident in Gesse Phase 1, Birnin Kebbi.

The incident occurred on August 26, 2026, when the suspects, Rufai Salihu and Aliyu Muhammad, were attacked by a mob over allegations of motorcycle theft.

The Police however, intervened and rescued the two suspects, who sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical attention.

One Boxer motorcycle was recovered from them.

The Command said the situation later escalated when the mob attempted to attack a Police facility in the area, prompting the deployment of reinforcement, which dispersed the mob.

Seven motorcycles abandoned during the incident were subsequently recovered and impounded by the Police.

According to a statement issued on Friday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bashir Usman, the two suspects are assisting investigators to establish their involvement in motorcycle theft and identify other persons allegedly connected to the criminal activity.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Umar M. Hadejia, condemned the resort to jungle justice, urging members of the public to allow the Police and other lawful authorities to investigate allegations and prosecute offenders.
