I saw only the placenta’ – Mother cries out as police arrest fake doctor over missing baby in Edo

Date:

A tearful woman identified only as Princess Oke whose baby was stolen at Grace Health Maternity Healthcare at Upper Sokponba Road in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State, said she only saw her baby’s placenta without her newborn baby after delivery.

The 46-year-old man, Osazee Okungbowa who posed as a medical doctor at the medical facility was paraded at the Nigeria police Command in Edo State, until his lid was blown up in connection with the shocking incident.

According to Oke, labour began when she was induced at about 11 a.m., after which a midwife asked her to proceed to a nearby house for the delivery.

She revealed that she heard her baby cry after giving birth but became unconscious shortly afterwards, leading to Okungbowa’s arrest by the Nigeria police, following complaints by the complainant few weeks ago in Benin.

“When I regained consciousness, I saw only the placenta. The fake doctor had disappeared. Later, they told me my baby had died, but I don’t believe them.

“They (hospital workers) claimed my baby was premature, but how can a baby delivered after 35 weeks of pregnancy be described as premature?” she queried.

But Okungbowa who is an actor in the alleged hunan trafficking and disappearance of newborn, denied the allegations, but he admitted that he was not a qualified medical doctor.

The suspect also said he never attended any tertiary institution and was only trained as an auxiliary nurse.

“I am a fake doctor. I was employed as the manager of the hospital. The owner employs both qualified and unqualified persons,” according to the suspect.

He explained that he was ill on the day the woman went into labour and did not personally conduct the delivery, claiming he invited another woman to assist with the childbirth.

He also alleged that the newborn developed complications after delivery and was being taken to a hospital with an incubator when the baby died.

“The baby was not feeling fine, so we decided to take the child to a hospital with an incubator. On the way, the baby died. We later buried the baby at an Anglican cemetery,” according to him.

Police said the suspect was arrested following a complaint by Princess Oke, who alleged that the baby she delivered under his care mysteriously disappeared shortly after birth.
