Gunmen kill Edo police orderly, steal rifle, N5m cash from expatriate

An escort mission involving a Chinese national, ended in tragedy last Wednesday July 16, 2025 when suspected armed robbers ambushed and killed a police orderly attached to the expatriate in Benin City.

According to Zagazola Makama, a counterinsurgency publication said the attack happened at approximately 2:45 p.m. on First East Circular Road, shortly after the police escort team had completed a cash withdrawal from a bank.

The police orderly identified as sergeant, Aminu Yusuf, bearing Force Number 504545, who was attached to a company as part of an authorized police assignment, allegedly lost his life in the attack.

The source said the victim had been tasked with escorting an expatriate during a routine cash movement from Zenith Bank’s Sapele Road branch on the fateful day.

While returning from the bank with N5 million cash, their vehicle was attacked by four armed men who opened fire on the team, fatally wounding Sgt. Yusuf and making away with his AK-47 rifle (Breech No. BD 347851), 30 rounds of ammunition, and the cash,” said the sources.

Following the attack, Yusuf was rushed to the Specialist Hospital in Benin but was declared dead on arrival. His body has since been taken to God’s Care Morgue.

The state police command has launched a manhunt for the attackers and is working to recover both the missing weapon and the stolen funds, according to the source.

Spokesperson for the Nigeria Police Command in the State, CSP Moses Yamu could not be reached for comment.
