The Ado of the Fulani has requested a one-week grace period to enable herdsmen to prepare for relocation from farmlands in Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State.
The group made the appeal during a stakeholders’ meeting held on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at the Council Secretariat in Obagaji arising from a 48-hour quit notice order to vacate all farmlands by the Council chairman, James Melvin Ejeh.
Obochi Solomon, the Chief Press Secretary to the Agatu LGA Chairman disclosed this in a statement after the stakeholders meeting where the Council boss conceded to the request.
The statement said Ejeh sued for the need to protect farming activities in Agatu ahead of the planting season.
He noted that agriculture is the backbone of the local economy and that farmers must be able to access their lands without fear or obstruction.
The Council boss commended the relative peace currently enjoyed in the area but stressed that ensuring uninterrupted farming activities was a top priority.
The statement partly read, “Our farmers must cultivate without disruption. We will do everything necessary to create a safe environment for them”.
Earlier, Oloche Silas, General Youth Chairman of Agatu LGA, pledged on behalf of Agatu youths to support the peaceful evacuation process and to refrain from any form of violence and fatalities arising from farmers and herders conflicts in parts of the State and beyond.
