Ex-labour minister Ngige remanded in prison over alleged contract fraud

Chris Ngige, Nigeria’s former minister of Labour and Productivity, has been remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre over alleged contract fraud, pending the hearing of the bail application next week.

Justice Mariam Hassan of the Federal Capital Territory High court issued the remand order on Friday after he pleaded not guilty to eight-counts charge on the allegations preferred against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

The counts border on on abuse of office and acceptance of gifts from contractors of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund while he served as its supervising minister between September 2015 and May 2023.

The court thereafter adjourned the case to Monday, 15th December, 2025 for the hearing of the bail application by his legal counsel .
