The Senator representing Edo South Senatorial District, Senator Neda Imasuen is in a fix arising from alleged conflict of interest over his labour party candidate, Olumide Akpata, Labour Party and All Progressives Congress (APC) Candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo for Saturday September 21st governorship election in Edo State.
Members of the LP in Oredo held a meeting at the weekend in Benin City and assessed the performance and impact of Senator Imasuen since his election to the red chamber in 2023.
During the meeting, some members of LP were said to have questioned some actions of the first term Legislator, and reportedly accused of anti-party activities
Senator Imasuen, was a former legislative Aide to Senator Matthew Urhoghide at the National Assembly before he contested the same seat on LP platform and won the 2023 Senatorial election.
His victory at the primaries came shortly after his benefactor – Senator Urhoghide, lost Edo South PDP primary election to former Majority Leader of the State House of Assembly, Matthew Iduoriyekemwen.
Urhoghide was said to have afterwards sponsored his (Imasuen) Senatorial ambition on the LP platform and led his to victory.
In the build up to the Edo State governorship election, Urhoghide dumped the PDP and rejoined the APC- a party he left about 10 years ago.
Urhoghide thereafter emerged as the Director General of governorship election campaign Councils for APC.
His closeness to the LP party Senator and perceived alliance in the this week Saturday’s governorship election has raised concerns among the LP supporters and stakeholders.
In addition to the LP Senator perceived lack of interest in Labour party governorship election campaigns in the State, point to the arguments.
Addressing supporters better known as ‘obedients’ across the 19 Local Government Areas of Edo State at LP Grand finale rally on Wednesday September 18th in Benin City, the ovation for Senator Imasuen was low.
Yet, he struggled to convince members of his party to reenact the will as he double speak. According to him, “Edo, we have done it before. We will do it again”.
“There is nothing to fear. Whether they like it or not, God is on our side. People in the street are on our side. Only a few ones that are against us.
“We have the unity, strength. We can defend our votes”, he said.
