Labour Party House of Representatives Candidate for Akoko-Edo Constituency
in 2023 general elections, Mr Omobayo Marvellous Godwins has been sworn-in Edo State deputy Governor.
He replaced the former deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu who was impeached by the State House of Assembly on Monday April 8, 2024.
Immediately, 38-year-old Omobayo, Governor Godwin Obaseki’s nominee, took his oath of office by the Chief Judge of the State, Justice Daniel Okungbowa at 1: 33p.m at the Festival Hall, Government House in Benin City.
The decision by the House of Assembly, followed allegations of misconduct bothering on perjury and leaking of official secrets of government against Shaibu, following adoption of the report of a 7-man Committee set up by to investigate the allegations against him.
Shaibu and his legal team were reported not to have honoured the final sitting of the Committee.
The move is a culmination of the political squabble between Shaibu and his former Principal, Godwin Obaseki over succession tussle ahead of Edo State governorship election billed for September 21, 2024.
18 out of 19 Lawmakers present at the sitting on Monday, voted in support of Shaibu who has made as the first deputy Governor to be impacted in Edo State.
In a remark, Governor Godwin Obaseki, described his tenure as Governor as eventful and interesting.
Obaseki who read from the Bibble book of Proverbs Chapter 16 verse 9, prayed God to direct their path in Government.
He revealed that swearing-in of the new deputy Governor was in line with Constitutional provisions of the law, following the impeachment of the former deputy Governor.
Responding, the new deputy Governor, Omobayo Marvellous Godwins, promised to support the Governor to achieve his mandate and be fair to everyone in the State.
In his vote of thanks, the IV of Somorika, HRH, Oba Sule Idaiye who spoke on behalf of the traditional rulers that were present on the occasion, likens Obaseki as a magician
He described the Governor as man of the people and tasked the new deputy Governor to be diligent in his duties.
According to him, “Let me put it on record that the people of Akoko-Edo has seen a new life.
“I think your job as a deputy Governor in this election will count”, he said.
PROFILE OF OMOBAYO MARVELLOUS GODWINS
Omobayo is the new Deputy Governor of Edo State.
He is a seasoned Engineer with a proven track record of progressive professional experience in the oil and gas sector.
Born July 19, 1986, Omobayo hails from Akoko Edo Local Government Area of the State.
With a B.Eng Degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Msc in Public Administration from the University of Benin (UNIBEN), he is well suited for the role as a professional and an expert in public administration.
He is a registered member of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) and the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN).
A thorough-bred young professional, he serves as a Senior Maintenance Engineer in Dresser Wayne West Africa Limited, cutting his professional teeth in the operations in the South South area, providing top-notch services and growing the business in the region.
He has also been active in politics in his local government, building bridges of trust with the people and mobilising them for common causes, breaking political barriers to the chagrin of his opponents.
