Operatives of the Nigeria Police have arrested a governorship aspirant, Blessing Agbonmhere for dressing in in a Spy Police uniform in a viral video evidencing political comment ahead of Saturday September 21st governorship election in the State.
Force Public Relations officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed his arrest on Wednesday in a statement which condemned the alleged impersonation by the politician on social Media platforms.
He also dissociated the Police Force from “unauthorized political comments by supernumerary police officer” who criticised Peoples Democratic Party and All Progressives Congress for inflicting hardship on Nigerians during an interview at undisclosed location.
He clarified that Supernumerary Police Officers are private individuals trained by the Nigeria Police for specific security functions, primarily within their place of employment.
The statement reiterated that Agbonmhere’s political comments do not reflect the views of the Nigeria Police, and the public ahead of further investigation.
The Police spokesman, urged the public to disregard any such statements ans vowed the continued commitment of the Nigeria Police Force under the leadership of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun to professionalism, neutrality, and the rule of law.
Part of the statement, which however did not mention Agbonmhere’s name, reads, “They are not on the payroll of the NPF and do not swear to the oath of allegiance like sworn regular police officers.
“Thus they have the right to belong to any political party of their choice and freedom of expression. In this extant case, the Police frowns at the wearing of his official SPY uniform and engaging in political activities”.
ACP Adejobi said, “The individual involved has been arrested for further investigations. We reiterate that his political comments do not reflect the views of the Nigeria Police, and the public is urged to disregard any such statements”.
Agbonmhere’s who hails from Edo North Senatorial District, contested the 2020 and 2024 governorship elections and later stepped down.
