Edo govt ratifies suspension of ‘errant Enigie’

The Edo State government has ratified the indefinite suspension of over 70 errant Enigie (Dukes) in Benin Kingdom, Edo South Senatorial District.

The Enigie were suspended by Omo N’ Oba N’ Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, CFR for staging a cultural Coup d’ etat against the Oba and the traditional institution monarchy during the previous administration.

The State government made at its State Executive Executive Council meeting held on Tuesday March 25th 2025 in Government House, Benin City.

Commissioner for Communication Paul Ohonbamu conveyed the Government’s decision while addressing journalists at the end of the State Executive Council meeting.

He announced the nullification of the creation of seven parallel Benin Traditional Councils in Benin Kingdom and reaffirmed that there is Benin Traditional Council.

Ohonbamu described the action of the suspended Enigie as a Coup against the Benin palace and thereafter cannot be tolerated by the State government.

Governor Okpebholo had restored the full Statutory Rights, which the previous administration, withdrew from the Oba of Benin after the alleged conspiracy by some Enigie backfired.

The move following the creation of seven additional Benin Traditional Councils (BTCs) across the seven Local Government Areas in Edo South Senatorial District of the State, which the government said ceases to exist, except the Benin Traditional Council.
