The Edo State government appears to have relaxed enforcement orders against trading at unauthorized places across the State over Saturday February 23rd Presidential and National Assembly polls.
No reason was given for the respite to commercial vehicle drivers and street traders for the behaviour that runs contrary to governor Godwin Obaseki-led government’s urban renewal policy.
Traders have returned to the popular King square and other adjoining routes where street trading and motorists that often disobey traffic rules and Regulations with impunity.
Officials of Public Works Guards (PUWOV) and Edo State Traffic Management Agency (EDTSMA) have back down on nuances that cause obstruction on roads, according to on-the-spot assessment of the situation.
The action has undermined the government’s efforts in addressing environment challenges, including flooding and indiscriminate dumping of refuse that blocks drainages and waterways.
The situation is not different at the popular Oba, Uselu, Osa, New Benin and Agbado markets as traders displayed their wares on the road during day and night without any form of security safeguard.
A visit to Urokpota hall which use to be a beehive of activities including Mobile court where offenders are arraigned, tried and fine and sometimes sentenced to jail for various offences, was lonely unlike the usual hustle and bustle.
Earlier, the Government had extended the depleted Edo City Transport Service (ECTS) the free bus toll across the various routes for residents of the State to Friday February 24, 2023.
The Government’s free toll policy meant to alleviate the sufferings of residents whose livelihoods have been impacted arising from the new monetary policy by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), aimed at reducing vote-buying during elections and reduce high rate of inflation in the nation.
