Court convicts two smugglers for assaulting Nigeria Customs officers

A Federal High Court, sitting Abeokuta in Ogun State presided over by Justice Demi-Ajayi has convicted and sentenced two smugglers, Felarun Oluwasegun and Fakorede Jelili to two years imprisonment with hard labour without any option of fine by Court for assaulting Nigeria Customs officers.

Felarun Oluwasegun and Fakorede Jelili were first arraigned in Court in May 2023 on a three-count charge and have been remanded at the Correctional center in Abeokuta since before their conviction on Tuesday, February 6, 2024.

The Court found Felarun and Jelili
guilty of possession of smuggled goods and assaulting Customs Officers with charms and horsewhips at Owoyele-Igbogila, Yewa-North Local government, Area of the State in 2023, the National Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent of Customs
Abdullahi Maiwada, revealwd this in a statement he issued on behalf of the Comptroller-General of Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi on February 11, 2024.

The statement said the Comptroller General of Customs, Adeniyi, recalled that 11 suspects were convicted for committing offences of improper importation, assault of Customs officers, possession of Pangolin scales meant for export, among other illicit items, while some other smuggling and related cases instituted in the courts are at various stages of prosecution and would be followed up diligently.
