United States have announced closure of its Embassy in Nigeria’s Capital in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos State on Thursday, January 9, 2025 in honour of its late former President Jimmy Carter, at age 100 in his hometown, Georgia.
This was disclosed in a statement shared on X by the United States Mission in Nigeria, on Wednesday, January 08.
The statement reads: “The U.S. Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Thursday, January 9, 2025 in honor of former President Carter’s passing.
“We remember former President Jimmy Carter, a tireless advocate for peace, democracy, and human rights.
“As the first U.S. President to visit Nigeria, he strengthened U.S.-Nigeria relations and supported Nigeria’s democratic process. His legacy continues to inspire us”, according to the statement.
The body of Jimmy Carter is being taken from his home state of Georgia to Washington DC, where the former US president will lie in state before a large state funeral.
According to the BBC, a first funeral service was held for him in Atlanta on Saturday at the Carter Presidential Center, where hundreds of members of the public came to pay their respects.
On Tuesday, Carter’s body has departed the centre one last time after a ceremony at 09:30 EST (14:30 GMT).
