Assembly polls: Edo government feeds women, woos voters with wrappers

The Edo State government has provided incentives for women groups in Edo State, ahead of Saturday March 11th governorship and State house of Assembly elections.

The Muslim and Christian women groups were hosted on Tuesday in Government house, Benin City, the State Capital where wrappers were shared and cash gifts were shared.

TheNewspad reports that the Muslim women were the first set of guests that were hosted by the embattled Governor before the Christian women converged on the same venue in the afternoon.

Top government officials who presided over the session where guests were entertained with food and drinks, appealed to the women to support the government and vote for the ruling Peoples Democratic Candidates (PDP) in the State.

They were were urged to vote for the 24 Peoples Democratic party (PDP) Candidates gunning for the State house of Assembly positions in the elections.

A jubilant Muslim woman who spoke to TheNewspad Correspondent, described the treat as novel and commended the State government for hosting them on the eve of the 2023 International Women’s Day Celebration.

One of the beneficiaries who gave her name as Bilkisu Ibrahim, thanked the government for the wrapper and entertainment.

She disclosed that they were encouraged to not only vote for PDP, but, canvass for support for the ruling party.

Earlie in the week, Gov Governor Godwin Obaseki, player host to cross session of religious leaders in the State, urging them to vote PDP Candidates in the elections.

It was learnt that the Clerics across the various denominations, also offered marathon prayed for the Government and peaceful elections in Nigeria.

The choice of the Candidates to either adopt or vote in the upcoming polls by the women, was however not clear as at the time of filing this report.

TheNewspad recalled that at the twilight of the administration of Prof. Oserheimen Osunbor in 2008, some church leaders in Benin led by one Bishop Aghedo, converged on Edo State government house where they delivered a mock judgement in favour of Osunbor who was the gubernatorial Candidate of Peoples Democratic Party in 2007 election.

A few days later, Justice Peter Umeadi led panel of justices delivered the epic Election Tribunal judgement and declared Comrade Adams Oshiomhole who was at that time, Candidate of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).

The Judgment was accordingly upheld in favour of the petitioner by a three-man panel of Appeal court Justices led by Justice Abdullahi.
