Pandemonium broke out at the popular Kubwa market at about 1:50 p.m. on 25th October, 2026, in the FCT when an angry operative of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) armed with a pistol began firing sporadic gunshots into the air following an alleged assault on his wife, forcing business owners and shoppers to scamper for safety.
Confirming the incident in a statement on Wednesday, the spokesperson for the FCT Police Command, SP Josephine Adeh, said the suspect, identified as Onoja Samuel, a Deputy Superintendent of Corps with the NSCDC, was overpowered and disarmed by police operatives from the Kubwa Division who were promptly deployed to the scene.
Police investigations revealed that the suspect had gone to the market armed with a pistol following reports that some traders had assaulted his wife.
According to the police, during an ensuing argument with the traders, the suspect fired several shots into the air.
Adeh disclosed that a CZ pistol and seventeen (17) rounds of live 9mm ammunition were recovered from the suspect during his arrest.
The police assured that the NSCDC officer has been taken into custody and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, urged operatives of sister security agencies to exercise restraint and notify the relevant Police Divisions before embarking on operational assignments within the FCT to ensure proper coordination and prevent avoidable clashes.
