The Nigeria police Command in Ebonyi Stats has confirmed the arrest of Mother Martha Nkiru Offo, Superior General of the Sisters of Jesus the Good Shepherd (SJGS), following allegations of unlawful abduction and forced psychiatric treatment of her colleague, Nun.
The command’s spokesman, SP Joshua Ukandu, confirmed that Mother Offo was invited for questioning and subsequently granted bail same Thursday, September 3, 2026, following a petition.
The suspect has since been released on bail as investigations continue in the case involving Mother Offo was accused of masterminding the forced removal of Rev. Sister Mercy Chinwe Nnamchi from her internship post at the Alex Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hospital (AE-FETHA), Abakaliki, on May 30, 2026.
SP Ukandu said, “we are just investigating a matter, and she (Offo) was invited yesterday (Thursday). She made her statement. And the command is looking into the allegations or petition currently.
“She (Offo) is no longer in police custody. She was granted bail that yesterday”, according to the police spokesman.
The case was brought forward by the victim’s elder brother, Mr. Chukwudi Nnamchi, who petitioned both the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the Ebonyi State Police Command in June 2026.
Confirming the development, SP Ukandu stated, “We are just investigating a matter, and she was invited yesterday (Thursday).
“She made her statement, and the command is looking into the allegations. She is no longer in police custody; she was granted bail yesterday”.
According to the petition dated June 10, 2026 the ordeal began when Reverend Sister Mercy was allegedly handcuffed at her workplace by Sister Cecilia Chizoba Igboagbuchi, alongside two unidentified men linked to a psychiatric facility.
The family claims the action had the backing of congregation leaders, including Sister Celestina Obodo and Mother Martha Offo.
The victim was transported against her will to an undisclosed location in Enugu State under the pretext of mental instability, allegedly subjected to medical treatments and subjected to multiple injections without informed consent, while communication channels were blocked.
The victim’s relatives were initially denied access to her diagnosis, treatment plan, or physical visits until she was later transferred to Annunciation Hospital following intervention by advocacy groups.
