A civic advocacy group, Aiguobasinmwin Movement Worldwide, has called on former Niger Delta militant leader Asari Dokubo to
exercise restraint in his public comments regarding ancestral land in any part of Edo State.
President of the group, Iyamu Osaro Culture gave the advice on Sunday in a statement where he also urged Dokubo to respect Benin tradition and stay out of trouble on the issue.
Iyamu, expressed concern over recent remarks by Dokubo regarding ancestral lands, particularly in the Edo South Senatorial District, warning that such discussions are sensitive and should be handled with caution.
He said issues relating to history, territorial boundaries and ancestral lands should be addressed through established institutions, including the Benin Traditional Council, relevant legal authorities and government-mediated dialogue, rather than public rhetoric capable of heightening tensions.
The president recalled his involvement during the 2012 Edo State governorship election, claiming he intervened to assist Dokubo’s associates who were caught in security operations while in the state to support the re-election campaign of former Edo State governor Adams Oshiomhole.
According to him, the experience reinforced the importance of dialogue, respect for the rule of law and peaceful engagement in resolving disputes.
He stressed that the people of Edo State are peaceful and hospitable, urging all stakeholders to promote unity and avoid statements capable of undermining harmony in the State.
Iyamu, reinstated the commitment of Aiguobasinmwin Movement Worldwide to protecting Edo cultural heritage through peaceful, lawful and constitutional means.
