Judges’ prolonged physical absence from Enugu courts spark row

Date:

The prolonged absence of Enugu State High Court judges in Obollo-Afor area of the State, sparked row last Tuesday, after some lawyers allegedly sealing one of the courtrooms.

In a viral video, the action, was backed by litigants, following what they termed ‘persistent failure of judges’ posted to the area to conduct physical proceedings for some years in the State.

But multiple reports suggested that judges posted to Enugu North senatorial district resorted to virtual court proceedings due to the heightened level of insecurity in the area.

The administrative lapses occasioned by heightened insecurity in the area, has prompted judges resort to virtual sitting in the area, while a significant number of cases are either not mentioned on the course list or adjourned randomly by the court.

Worried by the unending tales of lamentation, lawyers in the district marched through major streets in Nsukka On June 3, 2026, to protest against what they described as the abandonment of courtrooms following the introduction of virtual proceedings.

The protest, according to o report, affected all five judicial divisions in the zone: Nsukka, Obollo-Afor, Enugu-Ezike, Ogbede and Umulokpa, ahead of last Tuesday when the lawyers shut down the high court in Obollo-Afor to press home their demands.

In the meantime, members of the Nigeria Bar Association, NBA have concluded plans to meet the State government to find amicable way to resolve the persisted security crisis in the locality.
