Discordant tunes have trailed the directive by the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Edo State chapter, mandating
all 18 Local Government chairmen across the State to mandate their officials to wear branded caps of President Bola Tinubu during official meetings at Council Secretariats.
The directive is in line with Governor who had pledged 2.5 million votes for President Bola Tinubu re-election in 2027 while swearing in newly appointed commissioners and inauguration of commissions and boards of agencies last Tuesday, to wear President Tinubu cap in order to gain access to meeting in Government House in Benin City.
Edo State chairman of ALGON, Sunny Ekpetika Ekpeson said the directive, which is part of efforts to visibly demonstrate grassroots solidarity with President Tinubu’s administration and political vision in Edo State, applies to supervisory councillors, senior special assistants (SSAs), and special assistants (SAs).
Ekpeson who disclosed this on Saturday in a statement endorsed by his media aide, Agbukor Lucky Apeakhuye, clarified that the display of political symbols at the local government level was a strategic step in solidifying support for the President ahead of general elections.
He revealed that the initiative stemmed from the message of political alignment recently reinforced by the State governor, Senator Monday Okpehbolo who was elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress.
Ekpeson said ALGON urges Local Government leaders to treat the directive with seriousness, adding that a unified visual representation of support would foster stronger political cohesion throughout the State.
According to him, “The pledged 2.5 million votes for President Tinubu from Edo State must not remain a mere aspiration”.
“We must begin to build that momentum from the grassroots now, and this includes symbolic acts that reflect our political commitment”, according to ALGON.
