Mob hacks alleged motorcycle thief to death in Edo

A suspected robber has been hacked to death by a mob who reportedly caught him stealing a motorcycle on Thursday evening in Edo State, sparking outrage.

The suspect was doused on his body in petrol and flicked a lighter by mob who stood back and ignored his plea for mercy during the incident around Alli square, Ekpoma in Esan West Local Government area of the State.

TheNewspad reports that an angry mob, caught up with the robbers and descended on him, leading to the death before the arrival of Police operatives in the locality.

The chairman of Esan West Local Government Area, Collins Aigbogun confirmed the incident in a statement in response to the tragic incident.

He condemned the act of jungle justice and ordered a diligent investigation into the incident near Ambrose Alli University area.

The chairman of the Council also advised residents of Ekpoma to be calm and be law-abiding, assuring security agencies have opened investigation into the crime and bring the culprits to book.

According to him, “The uncivil and heinous crime of taking a life is outrightly unacceptable.

“I vehemently frown and condemn this unfortunate misdeed by the perpetrators of this act as inhumane, unacceptable and unconstitutional.

‘Right to life is fundamental to every citizen and no individual or group of individuals is permitted to melt any form of jungle justice contrary to extant of established laws of the Constitution on any who hasn’t been tried by a competent court of jurisdiction”, he said.
