Police High Command looking over shoulders and ejected the outgoing Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki from Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in Benin City, amid tension.
The incident happened about 3.am on Sunday when he sat akimbo beside the Resident Electoral Commissioner’s office shortly before collation of election results stand down to 10a.m on Sunday morning by the REC, Anugbum Onuoha.
Obaseki was said to be lurking around and fiddling with his mobile phone at the complex without paying attention to proceedings of collation of results Edo State governorship poll held on Saturday September 21st 2024.
The Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Edo election, Frank Mba in-charge of the election ordered Obaseki out of the complex along with his security aides ostensibly to ward-off the threat of violence.
The action by the law enforcement agency was prompted by the alarm raised Dennis Idahosa, deputy governorship Candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC), saying that the Governor has no business at the venue of the collation centre.
“Obaseki must come out. He is not supposed to be here. He is not an INEC staff. Nigeria Police should not compromise”, Idahosa said.
TheNewspad reports that political violence surges after restrained Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) protesters led by the Director General of the party campaign Council, Matthew Iduoriyekemwen,
staged a protest at the complex, accusing the electoral umpire of attempting to subvert the will of voters.
The final outcome of the election, which is yet to be announced at the time of filing this report, has kept voters and other Stakeholders within and outside Nigeria, in suspense with supporters of PDP and APC claiming victory on social Media space.
