Protests: Hoodlums stone Obaseki’s convoy

The Governor of Edo State, Mr Godwin Obaseki allegedly got a close shave with death on Thursday August 1st when miscreants who defied the presence of security agents, hurled water cans at his convoy in Oredo Local Government Area of the State.

The incident happened at about 3:30pm at the King square while he was addressing nationwide #EndBadGovernance in Nigeria protests, dubbed 10-day of rage: Taking back Nigeria.

Though his Media handlers denied the report, but witnesses account, attested to the incident while lauded security agents at the venue for exercising restraint even at the height of provocation.

The embattled Governor was also said to have sneaked into the venue of the rally apparently to show solidarity with the hunger protesters.

The outrage was as a result of unsavory comments by the Governor, who challenged protesters, to point Agberos (Thugs) in his government to him, assuring them that he will remove such an individual from office.

Upon sighting him, angry protesters began to call him out and started chanting, ‘Mr Governor come out from your vehicle! Come out Mr Governor!’.

As the call became louder, Governor Obaseki stepped into the arena and mounted the podium and began to address the protesters.

The development happened shortly after a group of protesters from 3rd East Circular Road in their thousands who converged on the King square had marched through Airport Road axis in Benin City.

He was quoted as saying that: “I will remove Agbero in Edo. If you know any Agbero, tell me now; I will remove him”.

Suddenly, emotions of some angry demonstrators who thought the Governor’s comments were punctuated in error, began to run high.

Suddenly, angry youths
bouncing with energy and shrieking with rage, booed the Governor who was quickly smuggled into a steaming SUV packed near the podium as hoodlums hurled stones at his convoy.

TheNewspad could not immediately capture the violent scenes of the attack on Governor who had warned against violent attacks at the eve of the nationwide #EndBadGovernance protests in Edo State, due to safety concern.
