Suspected thugs have taken over Egor Local Government Secretariat, following the Council’s chairman, Eghe Ogbemudia impeached over corruption allegations levelled against her by the legislative Arm.
Ogbemudia, the during a session on Wednesday July 17th 2024 when the Legislative Arm of the Council over alleged padding of the Council’s 2024 Supplementary Budget to the tune of N1.7 billion and other allegations of corruption.
Ogbemudia’s impeachment was consequent upon a vote-of-no confidence against the chairman during a session by Egor Legislative Arm.
The Leader of the House and Councillor representing Ward 3, Godwin Uwadiae Edigin presided over the sitting that lasted for few minutes two days ago.
Shortly after a roll call of the legislative house, the Councillor representing Ward 2, Rt. Hon. Stella Osagioduwa Ogida, moved a motion for a no confidence vote against the chairman over allegations of gross misconduct, according to reports.
According to her, “This is the 10th month since our inauguration and we, the Councillors of Egor Legislative Arm do not have our offices. We have also uncovered the padding of the Council’s supplementary budget to the tune of N1.7 billion.
Reports said the Chairman did not involve the Councilors in the preparation and approval of the Council’s Supplementary Budget.
“After reviewing these actions and many other acts of gross misconduct, I want to pass a vote of no confidence on the Chairman”.
Seconding the motion, Mr Ambassador Elliot Inneh, Councillor representing Ward 9, said, “We have tried to reach out to the Honourable Chairman to no avail.
“Before us today, we have a budget proposal amounting to N6.054bn that was passed through this hallowed chambers.
“To our greatest surprise, we found out that the Chairman in conivance with the erstwhile Leader of the House, went behind our back and padded the budget to the tune of N7.896bn”, he said.
The Leader of the House, Mr Edigin, called for a voice vote, with the majority of Councillors conceding to the motion. A motion for impeachment was thereafter moved and passed.
TheNewspad reports that security agents watched from the flank, while jubilant suspected thugs smoke and entertained themselves at the Local Government Secretariat.
The unfolding development has sent jitters down the spines of Council workers, ahead of Ogbemudia’s possible replacement.
The impeached Council boss, who is one of the daughters of two time military administrator of Bendel and Civilian Governor of Mid West Region both defunct, late Brig.-General Samuel Osaigbovo Ogbemudia.
Eghe Ogbemudia, was at the apex of a pyramid of the ruling Peoples Democratic party power in the State before the sudden turn of events at the Council, ahead of Edo State Governorship election billed for September 21st 2024.
Her removal was linked to her allegiance to the impeached deputy Governor of the State, Mr Philip Shaibu, who was reinstated by a Federal High Court in Abuja presided over Justice Kolawole Omotosho on Wednesday July 17th 2024.
