Candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2023 Presidential election, Abubakar Atiku has proposed six-year single tenure rotational presidency across the six geopolitical zones in Nigeria, ahead of 2027 general elections.
Last week in Abuja,Justice John I. Okoro-led Panel of the Supreme Court on the Presidential Election dismissed the appeals filed by the Candidates of PDP and the Labour Party, Peter Obi before the apex Court.
The Adamawa State born politician said part of recommendations to the National Assembly, would promote equity, foster national unity and reduce alleged desperation of incumbent administration in future elections.
The measure, could prevent what he termed as gang-up of two or more geopolitical zones to organize the presidency among themselves with the exclusion of other zones in the federation.
The former Vice President made the submission in reaction to the recent Supreme Court Judgement that affirmed electoral victory of President Bola Tinubu, Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the polls.
According to him, “In order to reduce the desperation of incumbent government in an election, promote equity, and national unity, we need to move to a single six-year tenure for President to be rotational among the six geopolitical zones in Nigeria.
“This could prevent the ganging up of two or more geopolitical zones from organizing the presidency among themselves with the exclusion of other zones”, Atiku said.
While declaring that he will not resign from partisan politics or his party, Atiku implored members and leaders of PDP to sustain the momentum and keep faith in Nigeria’s main opposition party despite its current challenges.
The PDP Presidential Candidate,
alleged that Nigerians are not oblivious of the danger that lies ahead President Tinubu’s mandate and berated the apex Court for failing to defend Nigeria democracy.
TheNewspad recalls that prior to his emergence as Candidate of PD in the election, Atiku had disagreed with the stance of G-5 Governors led by Nyesom Wike, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) who said at different fora that he is for rotational presidency shortly after the later lost PDP Presidential primary elections to Atiku.
