The federal government has asked Edo State governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki to stop complaining over deplorable federal roads in the State, urging him to prioritize safety lives instead of erecting billboards — ‘This road belongs to the federal government, please bear with us’.
But Obaseki through his media Aide, Mr Crusoe Osagie, had accused some security agents acting at the behest of the federal government of chasing contractors that were mobilised by the State government to carryout palliative repair on Benin-Sapele road in the State from site.
Dave Umahi, the Minister of Works, dismissed the claim when he featured on Channels television Sunrise Daily programme where he sub- national governments not authorized by law to collect road taxes (relief order).
He implored the Governor to consider the plights of Edo people and intervene especially now that campaigns are over.
The Minister noted that roads users whose lives are endangered do not care about who owns the roads.
He said, but “I find it very funny when some people go and put sign boards on roads. ‘This is a federal road, please bear with us’.
“Again, I do not want my good friend, Governor Obaseki to complain. There is nothing like federal or State roads when the people are suffering. Nigerians are the people suffering.
“There is a quarry that is operating in Edo State. Deploy road equipment to such roads that are deplorable and put stone base on the roads”, Umahi said.
