The federal government has conferred posthumous honours on four notable Nigerians who lost their lives while fighting for freedom and survival in Ogoniland, Nigeria Delta region.
The quartet, Chief Edward Kobani, Chief Albert Badey (CON), Chief Samuel Orage and Chief Theophilus Orage were all conferred with the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) honour by the federal government.
President Bola Tinubu made the pledge few months ago when he received the report on the Ogoni Consultations.
The report was from the Dialogue Committee, which is comprised of key stakeholders of Ogoniland, led by Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara.
The late Ogoni leaders, remembered as part of the vanguard that resisted oppression in the Niger Delta, were executed alongside renowned activist, Ken Saro-Wiwa, in 1995 by the military regime of General Sani Abacha, a move that drew global outrage and placed Nigeria under international sanctions.
Nigeria’s Minister of Regional Development, Abubakar Momoh, who stood in for President Bola Tinubu’s during the awards presentation on Wednesday in Rivers.
He expressed commitment to the development of Ogoniland, listing various efforts by the current administration to improve the lives of the people.
